Refurbishment! The new ochs und junior space is taking shape. 180 square metres of rented space located on one of Lucerne's major traffic arteries, this is where ochs and junior will soon be based. Tracking down colours, functions and materials. Debating and looking, assembling moon phases and fetching a beer from the fridge.

Umbau! Die ochs und junior Lebensraum Gestaltung nimmt Formen an. Auf 180qm bezahlbarer Fläche, an einer Hauptverkehrsachse in Luzern, ziehen bald die Ochsen ein. Aussuchen von Farben, Funktionen und Materialien. Diskutieren und staunen, Mondphasen zusammensetzen und ein Bier aus dem Kühlschrank holen.

All this and much much more will be up and running in spring in Lucerne.

All dies und noch sehr sehr viel mehr gibt es am Frühling in Luzern.

We're doing only what's necessary. The costs are reasonable. We're using what already there and making the most of the large floor area. Everything will be possible – provided the quality remains high.

39 mm diameter is Ludwig Oechslin's favourite size for a wristwatch. Elegant, balanced and timeless. We also have friends in the Netherlands who like that size. That's what finally convinced us!

Spring 2012, then, will find us offering the tinta collection in both sizes, 42 mm and 39 mm.

39mm is Ludwig Oechslin's Lieblingsgrösse für eine Armbanduhr. Elegant, ausgewogen und ausserhalb jeder Modeströmung. Zudem haben wir Freunde in den Niederlanden, die genau diese Grösse mögen. Das hat uns überzeugt!

Ab Frühling 2012 machen wir die tinta Kollektion zusätzlich zu den 42mm auch mit 39mm Durchmesser.

We'll start with the selene, the due ore and the mese tinta. The anno tinta in 39 mm will come a little later. We're already getting orders in for the new smaller size, which will be wrist-borne by the spring. They'll be sent out by FedEx or collected from us in person at our new place. Photos of the latter coming soon... ;-)

Gestartet wird mit der selene, der due ore und der mese tinta. Etwas später wird dann auch die anno tinta in 39mm zu haben sein. Erste Bestellungen für die neue Grösse laufen bereits und werden im Frühling an die Handgelenke kommen. Entweder per FedEx verschickt oder direkt bei uns im neuen Lokal abgeholt. Und davon zeigen wir bald erste Fotos... ;-)

Happy New Year!

Next year should prove one to remember.

With the help of a restored Gaggia coffeemaker, spring 2012 will find us making some fantastic espressos in this new venue.

We have a few more weeks to put our exciting ideas into practice. Then we'll be ready. Ready to take the next step with ochs und junior.

As well as blogging, we'll be keeping the large shop window open during the renovation and acclimatisation phases, so you'll be able to see how we're getting on.

We're really looking forward to it all – and perhaps you might like to come and visit us…

Einen guten Sprung ins neue Jahr!
Das nächste Jahr wird spannend.
Ab Frühling 2012 werden wir, mit einer restaurierten Gaggia Maschine, an dem Ort wunderbaren
Espresso machen.
Noch haben wir ein paar Wochen Zeit, um spannende Gedanken umzusetzen. Dann werden wir bereit sein. Bereit für den nächsten Schritt mit ochs und junior.
Da auch die grosse Schaufensterfront während Bau- und Ausprobierphase offen sein wird, werden wir immer mal wieder über den Stand der Arbeiten berichten.
Wir freuen uns halt eben riesig darauf - vielleicht werden Sie uns bald mal besuchen...

Digits are for Advent calendars! When it comes to displaying time horizons, Ludwig Oechslin has a different idea. Coming in the early part of next year is the ochs und junior anno tinta.

It's a watch with an annual calendar function: complete with date, weekday and months indications, it uses no alphanumeric characters at all. This watch, like the selene tinta, is the epitome of radical Oechslin. Mechanically built like his prototypes and designed with an ultra-elegant solution in mind. As few parts as possible! Depending on how you count, this technical innovation requires just three new parts and two modified ones.

Zahlen sind für Weihnachtskalender! Wenn es um die Anzeige von Zeithorizonten geht, hat Ludwig Oechslin eine andere Lösung. Auf das nächste Frühjahr kommt sie: die ochs und junior anno tinta.

Der Jahreskalender mit Datum, Wochentags- und Monatsanzeige - komplett ohne das Hilfsmittel von Zahlen und Buchstaben. Diese Uhr ist, wie schon die selene tinta, radikal Oechslin. Technisch so wie seine Prototypen aufgebaut, konstruktiv mit der elegantesten aller Möglichkeiten erdacht. So wenige Teile wie möglich! Je nach Zählart brauchen wir für die ganze technische Innovation 3 neue Teile und zwei abgeänderte.

Like with every development, the core functions are driven by the date indication mechanism. The remaining indications, such as with the MIH watch, the Ulysse Nardin perpetual calendar and the selene Tinta, are directly linked to the hour pinion. This collar with its two fingers is pressed directly onto the pinion and rotates twice in 24 hours.

Wie bei jeder Oechslin Entwicklung ist der Antrieb zentraler Funktionen über die Datumsschaltung gelöst. Die restlichen Anzeigen, wie bei der MIH Uhr schon, dem Ewigen Kalender von Ulysse Nardin oder der selene Tinta, stehen in direkter Verbindung zum Stundenrohr. Diese Manschette wird direkt aufgepresst und macht somit mit ihren zwei Fingern zwei Umdrehungen pro 24 Stunden.

The impulses are then received by the main parts of the annual calendar. The weekday indication wheel with its teeth is on the left, the month indication wheel is top right. Five of the latter's teeth are longer – these are for the 30-day months.

The little wheel between the two links them. The rhodanised elements will be made lighter for improved contrast.

Die Impulse werden dann von von den Hauptteilen des Jahreskalenders aufgenommen. Links das Wochentagsrad mit der sichtbaren Ausfräsung für die Anzeige, rechts oben das Monatsrad. Fünf Zähne sind jeweils länger - und zwar die welche Monaten mit 30 Tagen zugeordnet sind.

Dazwischen dann das Verbindungsrad von Datum und Monat. Die rhodinierten Flächen werden noch heller ausgeführt werden. Der Kontrast wird dadurch noch besser.

In the tinta version of the annual calendar, the function's components are incorporated directly into the the dial, which becomes an integral part of the function. In earlier days, there had been thoughts of doing the same with the deleted Delirium, and Swatch is still thinking about it. Other than that, no one else is working that way.

We'll be making a couple of detailed changes to the part, and then proceeding with its production.

Alle diese Bauteile werden in der tinta Ausführung des Jahreskalenders direkt im Zifferblatt integriert. Dieses ist somit ein funktionelles Bauteil der Funktion. Früher gab es ähnliche Ideen mal bei der gescheiterten Delirium und immer noch bei der Swatch. Sonst macht das niemand.

An dem Bauteil werden wir noch ein paar kleine Detailänderungen machen und dann sind wir bereit für die Produktion.

For CHF 8000, the purchaser will have what has got to be the world's most personalised annual calendar watch featuring an exceptional mechanical innovation. It'll be exactly the way the wearer wants it. Diameter-wise we'll start with 42 mm, but a 39 mm will be forthcoming too…

The Villa Augustus in Dordrecht! Really, a magical place on this Earth. Lovingly restored and nestling in a vegetable garden, the hotel is the right kind of venue for the second ochs und junior Breakfast World Tour. That's how we are with our watches...

Die Villa Augustus in Dordrecht! Wirklich eine magischer Platz auf Erden. Liebevoll restauriert, eingebettet in einen Gemüsegarten ist das Hotel der passende Rahmen für den 2. Halt auf der ochs und junior Frühstückswelttour. So leben wir unsere Uhren...

Yesterday evening I had some of their totally wonderful cheesecake, even though I had eaten enough... But, as I say, it was so good... At 7.30 the next morning I started setting up our horizontal three-dimensional PowerPoint presentation.

Tja, und hier hatte ich am Vorabend diesen sagenhaften Cheescake gegessen - obschon ich wirklich gar keinen Hunger mehr hatte... Aber eben - herrlich... Morgens um 7.30 - machte ich mich an den Aufbau der horizontalen, dreidimensionalen PowerPoint Präsentation.

It was around a year ago that we came up with the idea for an event in Lucerne. ochs und junior is a narrative that began around eight years ago with the concept for the MIH watch, and that Ludwig Oechslin and I have been working on continuously for the past three years. Sjoerd will carry on adding his drawings of our concepts and new products until the roll of paper is all used up.

Vor etwa einem Jahr hatten wir diese Idee schon einmal für einen Anlass in Luzern verwendet. ochs und junior ist eine Geschichte, die vor etwa 8 Jahren mit dem Konzept der MIH Uhr begonnen hatte und die nun von Ludwig Oechslin und mir, seit drei Jahren, immer weiter entwickelt wird. Auf diese Papierrolle wird Sjoerd noch solange Konzepte und Neuigkeiten weiterzeichnen bis sie aufgebraucht ist.

Und dann waren sie da, unsere Freunde aus den Niederlanden. 10.00 Morgens... Hausgemachtes Brot und die Sanddornmarmelade - und Cheesecake... :-)...

Right at the end of our paper time axis, we had an envelope, on which was written: "For your eyes only".

It remained closed the entire morning, of course. And the cryptic drawing referring to a puzzle remained unanswered.... Stay tuned for more information...

Und ganz am Ende der papierenen Zeitachse ein Umschlag auf dem geschrieben war: "For your eyes only". Natürlich blieb dieser den ganzen Morgen über verschlossen. Genau so wie der gezeichnete Hinweis auf... Rätsel aufwies... Bald mehr dazu...

I'm really looking forward to the second of our ochs und junior Breakfasts. The first was at the Ace Hotel in New York; this latest one will be at the wonderful Villa Augustus on Sunday, 11 December. Between 10h00 and 14h00 we'll be showing Ludwig Oechslin's innovations and prototypes, as well as the overall ochs und junior concept. There'll be much to talk about – and to eat!

Freue mich riesig auf das 2. ochs und junior Frühstück. Nach dem Ace Hotel in New York diesmal, am Sonntag den 11. Dezember, in der wunderbaren Villa Augustus. Zwischen 10.00 Uhr und 14.00 Uhr zeigen wir Ludwig Oechslin's Innovationen, Prototypen und das umfassende ochs und junior Konzept. Es wird viel zu besprechen geben - und zu essen!

There were hand-crafted Wald-Haus lamps on the Swisscom stand. Christof Peller makes them in the Zurch Oberland, as well as really nice skateboards – our company vehicle. It means the boss parks in his own office :-) ...

Handgemachte Wald-Haus Leuchten gab es am Swisscom Stand zu bewundern. Christof Peller baut diese von Hand in seiner Zürcher Oberländer Fabrik. Zudem seit 20 Jahren die besten Skateboards - unser Firmenfahrzeug. Klar ist, dass bei uns der Chef gleich in der Firma parkiert :-) ...

Meanwhile over in the furniture section of the show, our cartoonist, stand designer and professional Dutchman Sjoerd van Rooijen was exhibiting his outdoor heated baths. Our thanks to him for our elegant stand – great work, Sjoerd!

Derweil im Möbelbereich unser Cartoonist, Messestandbau Designer und Berufsholländer Sjoerd van Rooijen die heissesten Freiluftöfen und Badewannen verkaufte. Danke Sjoerd für diesen schlichten, eleganten und ungeschleckten Ochsenstand - tolle Arbeit!

We've no idea how many times visitors took it in turn to assemble our selene tinta, the world's mathematically most accurate moon phase watch, and our elegant annual calendar. Ludwig Oechslin made it fairly easy for us, since the annual calendar function consists of just three parts, and the moon phase just five. There will soon be a blog on the parts that make up these functions: less is more!

Keine Ahnung wieviele Male faszinierte Menschen die mathematisch genauste Mondphase und den elegantesten Jahreskalender zusammengebaut haben. Die Herausforderung hatte uns ja Ludwig Oechslin bereits abgenommen - 3 Teile für den Jahreskalender und 5 für die Mondphase. Und auf genau diesen Punkt wollen wir bald mal im Ochsenblog eingehen - welche Teile zählen wir eigentlich? Denn bei uns zählt ja: Weniger ist mehr!

We're physically based in Lucerne, Switzerland. Instead of distributing our products around the world, we think it's better if people discover them for themselves – in Lucerne for instance! Every now and then, however, we pack our bags and our watches and go on a trip. This month you can find us at the Blickfang design show in Zurich, where we'll be presenting all four new tinta watches between 25 and 27 November…

ochs und junior gibt es weltweit zu sehen! Klar auf der Internetseite, dem Ochsenblog und Facebook.

Und sonst gibt es uns in Luzern. Statt uns an der weltweiten Überdistribution zu beteiligen machen wir Produkte die entdeckt werden können. Und zwar in Luzern! Ab und zu packen wir unsere Uhren ein und machen eine Reise. Im November an den Blickfang in Zürich. Zwischen dem 25. und dem 27. November zeigen wir an der Designmesse alle neuen tinta Uhren - alle vier...

Thomas Oschwald's idea was certainly ambitious, paddling a SUP board from Lake Walen to the France's Atlantic coast, then on up past Britanny, along the English Channel to Holland and back down the Rhine to Switzerland. A journey not without risks. Or unexpected situations. As it happens, he had to shorten his venture. Having aborted his first attempt, Thomas restarted in Lake Geneva and followed the Rhone and various canals to reach the Atlantic. Here's some footage! We still saw his trip as an adventure! We had given Thomas the third, untested, selene tinta to take on his journey, and he wore it every day. Polluted canal water, salt water, waves, surf, knocks, movement, sweat, etc. – we were keen to see how the watch would perform in the face of this onslaught.

Once Lukas got it back off Thomas, he put it through a battery of tests:

Verrückt war die Idee von Thomas Oschwald, mit einem SUP vom Walensee an den Atlantik zu paddeln. Weiter an der Bretagne vorbei, den Rhein hoch wieder in die Schweiz zurück. Eine solche Reise birgt Risiken. Es entstehen neue Situationen, die vorher nicht in Betracht gezogen wurden. Die Reise wurde etwas kürzer. Im zweiten Anlauf startete Thomas im Genfersee und erreichte den Atlantik. Hier ist der Film dazu! Für uns war es gleichermassen ein Abenteuer! Thomas hat die dritte gebaute und nicht getestete selene tinta mit auf seine Reise genommen und jeden Tag getragen. Dreckwasser, Salzwasser, Wellen, Surfen, Schläge, Bewegungen etc. - wir waren gespannt wie die Uhr nach diesem ultimativen Testlauf aussieht.

Right next to the crown, by the winding stem, a little patination that could be due to possible water ingress. At the end of his trip, Thomas spent a few days surfing in the Atlantic surf... saltwater, waves, sun... The special lubrication saved the day. No problem!

Gleich neben der Krone bei der Aufzugswelle eine kleine Patinierung die auf einen versuchten Wassereintritt zurückführen könnte. Thomas war am Ende seiner Reise noch ein paar Tage im Atlantik am Surfen... Salzwasser, Wellen, Sonne... Das Spezialfett hat hier mitgearbeitet. Alles ok!

And here's a little puzzle. The light-fast orange-coloured luminescent hands were lighter than they used to be. Could it be the sun shining through water on the crystal – a magnifying glass effect? Get in touch if you have any bright ideas!

Und hier haben wir ein kleines Rätsel. Die lichtechten orangefarbenen Superluminova Zeiger waren etwas heller als vor der Reise. Wir spekulieren auf die zu der Zeit starke Sonnenstrahlung mit Wassertropfen auf dem Glas - Lupeneffekt? Falls jemand eine andere Idee hat - wir lernen immer dazu!

That's the titanium moon phase disk with the luminescent full moon and dark grey new moon. One rotation per lunation!

So, da hätten wir die Titanscheibe mit dem nachtleuchtenden Vollmond und dem dunkelgrauen Neumond. Pro Lunation eine ganze Umdrehung!

The watch pulled through! Thinking radically and forging new paths is always risky. Concepts are only as good as the intellect behind them and the experience you gain. You never see everything to start with. Ludwig Oechslin's designs push the possibilities to their limits. ochs und junior make the case out of two parts with no movement-retaining ring, and make functions using as few parts as possible. ochs und junior is Ludwig Oechslin's concept atelier.

Every ochs und junior model breaks new ground. These watches are for people who like novel and intelligent ways of approaching solutions – and who perhaps themselves push the envelope in their private or working lives. That's why it was so good that Thomas Oschwald was able to put his selene tinta through the mill, and that we could afterwards check it out and apply our findings to other watches.

Die Uhr hat gehalten! Etwas radikal zu denken und neue Wege zu gehen birgt immer Risiken. Jedes Konzept ist immer nur so gut wie es gedacht wird und auf welchen Erfahrungen man aufbaut und lernt. Nie sehen wir alles auf einen Blick. Mit Ludwig Oechslins Konstruktionen gehen wir bei ochs und junior an Limiten. Wir bauen ein Gehäuse mit zwei Teilen, verzichten auf einen Werkhaltering, bauen Funktionen mit ganz wenigen Bauteilen. ochs und junior ist Ludwig Oechslins Konzeptwerkstatt.

Jede Uhr von ochs und junior ist ein Innovationsträger. Diese Uhren sind für Leute die Freude an neuen, intelligenten Lösungen haben und vielleicht auch selber mal an Grenzen gehen. Darum passte es so gut, dass Thomas Oschwald seine selene tinta strapazierte, wir nun die Testergebisse analysieren und in noch bessere Uhren umsetzen können.

Schon halbwegs richtige New Yorker bezogen wir am Samstag morgen im Ace Hotel den Loftroom, leider nur für ein paar Stunden, und bestückten diesen mit den acht Mondprototpen, tinta Uhren, einer anno cinquanta, der settimana junior und den drei ideas. Gezeichnete Konzepte klebten wir irgendwo im Raum an eine Wand, den Fernseher oder eine Verbindungstür...

Reason enough to produce a magazine for men – the Gentlemen's Report.

The modern gentleman of today has recourse to any one of many modes of transport, which provided the theme for the magazine's second edition. A stylish jaunt through autumnal Zurich.

Es gab also genügend Bedarf ein Magazin für Männer zu schaffen - den Gentlemen's Report.

Der moderne Gentlemen verfügt heute über mehrere Transportvariationen und somit war der Rahmen für die 2. Ausgabe der Zeitschrift gegeben. Eine stilvolle Spazierfahrt durch das herbstliche Zürich.

Patrick is about to start his studies in architecture with Mario Botha in Mendrisio. He worked as a bicycle courier for two years, which inspired the topic of his entrance examination assignment: transforming a traditional bike from the 1960s…

Patrick beginnt diese Woche sein Studium an der Architekturakademie Mendrisio von Mario Botha. Zwei Jahre hatte er als Fahrradkurier gearbeitet, was ihn zum Thema seiner Maturaarbeit inspirierte. Der Transformation eines Klassikers aus den 60er Jahren...

... into the one-off work, whose name is roughly translated as "wild street beast". Patrik created the beast at a bike-building course led by Thomas Neeser. The drawings are taken from his assignment.

This gentleman, only 19 years of age, demonstrated inspiration, creativity and originality, which makes him ideal as a wearer of an ochs und junior wristwatch. It's people like that that make the world a better place!

Well done, Patrick – here's wishing you years of enjoyment with your new watch!

... zum Einzelstück "Strassenwild". Umgesetzt wurde dieses Projekt im Velobaukurs von Thomas Neeser. Die Zeichnungen sind ein Auszug aus der umfassenden Dokumentation zu dieser Arbeit.

Der erst 19 jährige Gentlemen hat mit dieser Arbeit bewiesen über Inspiration, Kreativität und eigene Ideen zu verfügen. Er ist somit der passende Träger der ochs und junior. Solche Leute machen die Welt spannend!

Gentlemen's Run in Zurich. It starts at 14h30 on Saturday, 17 September at the National Museum Zurich. Gentlemen – don your best apparel and swing a leg over your beautiful or eccentric steeds!

Gentlemen's Run in Zürich. Am Samstag 17.9. wird um 14.30 Uhr beim Landesmuseum gestartet. Herren schwingt Euch gut gekleidet auf Eure schönen oder abenteuerlichen Fahrräder!

Because we are keen on elegance (especially as concerns our designs) and personal mobility, we are supporting the Gentlemen's Run.

The most elegantly turned-out entrant will be able to tell the time using his prize: a mese Tinta. The prizes will be handed out at 16h30 at the Park Hyatt hotel.

Weil uns Eleganz (gerade in unseren Konstruktionen) und die Freude an individueller Fortbewegung am Herzen liegt unterstützen wir den Gentlemen's Run

What does an ochs und junior tinta do at night? It carries on making itself useful! Its three hands glow in the dark, as do the sun at 12 o'clock and the indices (with their variable lengths adapted to the date spiral). The moon in the tinta selene also glows (in the above picture, it's waning). There'll be a new moon on 29 August, at which point you won't see it in the selene for a couple of days.

Was tut eine ochs und junior Tinta in der Nacht? Sie macht sich nützlich! Es leuchten die drei Zeiger, die Sonne bei 12 Uhr und die in ihrer Länge auf die Datumsschnecke abgestimmten Indizes. Der abnehmende Mond der selene verschwindet in Richtung Neumond. Am 29. August wird es so weit sein. Dann ist die Scheibe für wenige Tage unsichtbar.

The selene's moon disk is given an impulse twice a day by the epicyclic (or planetary) gearing designed by Ludwig Oechslin. As you would expect, the disk makes a complete rotation once per lunation.

Zwei mal pro Tag wird die Mondscheibe über das epizyklische Getriebe der Oechslin Konstruktion weiter gedreht. Die Titanscheibe vollbringt während einer Lunation eine komplette Umdrehung.

Der Mond steht im Zentrum! Und das sieht der Betrachter eben auch Nachts. Der Mond auf der selene leuchtet so, wie er in diesen Sommernächten vom Himmel reflektiert. Der nächste Vollmond ist am 12. September...

Once we get something into our heads, we see it through to its conclusion... This was one of the first ochs und junior website start pages! Does anyone remember it? The energy of the orange dots and the cartoon depicting Ludwig Oechslin is amazingly inventive. At that time we knew, of course, that Google did not have much to find, so there was not text on the page. And it could be that internet users were easily overwhelmed trying to establish a link with the horological innovations of a new watch brand... That's the way we wanted it...

In the meantime we have worked hard on developing our principal information tool. The sheer number of stories, of content supplied by Oechslin, have left it rather difficult to navigate. Our communications will never be as elegant as Oechslin's strokes of mechanical genius.

We have tried to map out a new and clear concept and have rejigged the website. These are the lines we've been thinking along:

Wenn wir uns etwas in den Kopf setzen ziehen wir das auch durch... Das war eine der ersten ochs und junior Internetstartseiten! Wer erinnert sich noch? Dir Kraft der orangefarbenen Punkte und der Cartoon Ludwig Oechslin überrascht von seiner eigenen Ideenkraft - oder so ähnlich. Natürlich wussten wir damals schon das Google nicht viel zu Finden hatte so ganz ohne Texte auf der Startseite. Und womöglich waren auch Internetnutzer leicht überfordert, einen Bezug zu Uhreninnovationen einer neuen Uhrenmarke zu sehen... Wir wollten es so...

In der Zwischenzeit haben wir unser Hauptinformationswerkzeug fleissig ausgebaut und adaptiert. Die schiere Menge an Geschichte, an Inhalten welche Oechslin liefert haben die Sache etwas unübersichtlich werden lassen - und: So elegant wie Oechslin's genial Konstruktionen bringen wir natürlich unsere Kommunikation nicht hin.

Wir haben es versucht, haben uns ein neues klares Konzept überlegt und die Internetseite neu strukturiert. Hier sind unsere Überlegungen:

We've never printed the logo, only branded or stamped it, or punched it into precious metal. That was one of our founding principles – and one we've stuck to! Actually, that's not quite true: it appears in print on the website. Online visitors should know that this is perhaps the first time they have come across a watch brand that doesn't put its logo on the dial.

The main thing is our watches! They now come in four product categories.

We are working on developing all four lines.

All four can be accessed online in parallel, with the website offering an overview at first glance. The ochs und junior story can be accessed directly under the products, the blog, Facebook and the new media section.

Das Logo wird nie gedruckt, nur gebrandmarkt, gestempelt und in Edelmetall punziert oder geprägt. Ein Grundsatz aus unseren Konzeptanfängen - wir halten uns immer noch daran! Nur auf unserer Internetseite musste es drauf. Der Gast soll wissen das er eventuell seinen ersten Kontakt mit einer Marke hat, welche sein Logo nicht auf das Zifferblatt schreibt.

Das Wichtigste sind unsere Uhren! Und die sind nun in vier Produktekategorien unterteilt.

Mit diesen arbeiten wir, diese bauen wir innerhalb dieser Familien aus.

It made sense to have this wonderfully drawn character there, as navigating the website was not as clear as it is now: Ludwig pointed to the links that had to be clicked. Now, however, the cartoon figure takes us through his world. He starts with a description of what's happening at ochs und junior…

The stories unfold as a series of threads, with the watch categories in parallel, each with its own thread. It's great for people who want a bit more background and like stumbling across hidden gems – such as the ox with Giorgio (where you can find out why ochs und junior is called what it is).

Das ist für die Leute die sich einlesen möchten und vielleicht die eine oder andere Überraschung finden möchten. As you would expect, more important than the perfect espresso is the newly created media section, where you can download high-resolution images. It took quite a lot of time fielding all the press enquiries and transferring the images via yousendit.com – and quite often the size was too big for sending via e-mail. The media gallery takes the pressure off. And who knows, a watch of ours might, at the last minute, suddenly appear on the cover of brand eins because our images are available :-). We're currently working on an online store, so our products will be easier to get hold of abroad. The website is all very well – I personally still prefer meeting people face-to-face or communicating via e-mail, telephone or Skype. You'll find all my details on the internet – and Facebook in the future…

Wichtiger natürlich als der perfekte Espresso ist der neu geschaffene Medienbereich zum Runterladen von hochauflösenen Fotos. Hatte ich doch bei jeder Medienanfrage ziemlich viel Fleissarbeit zu erledigen um all die Fotos per yousendit.com an das Medienhaus zu senden - für ein e-Mail war die Sache meistens zu schwer. So erleichtern wir Arbeit. Und wer weiss, vielleicht kommen wir ja im letzen Moment auf die Titelseite vom brand eins - nur weil das Foto bereit liegt... :-). Einkaufen aus dem fernen Ausland wird auch bald einfacher - wir arbeiten an einem Webshop. Am meisten freue ich mich allerdings immer noch über den direkte Kontakt, den Austausch über das e-Mail, ein Telefon, Skype oder den Besuch. Darum sind meine kompletten Kontaktdaten im Internet... Design? What is its significance to ochs und junior?

During Baselworld 2010 Ludwig Oechslin and I sauntered through the exhibition halls and philosophised about the design of the new watches. Oechslin: "It seems to me that a certain degree of arbitrariness has crept into the design idiom these days. The form of display changes for little or no reason. Anything is possible! I observed this phenomenon when working on the Freak."

In the case of complications and the ensuing design, a lot is more, and more has a greater effect. Oechslin does things differently! For him, there is beauty in function. Elegance is when there is clarity and the watch is useful.

Design? Gestaltung? Welche Bedeutung hat das für ochs und junior??

An der Baselworld 2010 schlenderten Ludwig und ich durch die Messehallen und philosophierten über die Gestaltung der neuen Uhren. "Mir fällt auf, dass heute eine gewisse Beliebigkeit in der Gestaltungssprache Einzug hält. Die Form der Anzeige ist relativ unbedeutend veränderbar. Alles geht! Ich habe ja selber mit der Freak diesen Effekt beobachtet" machte Oechslin klar...

Komplikationen und die entsprechende Gestaltung dazu. Viel ist mehr und mehr hat mehr Effekt. Oechslin denkt da anders! Für ihn ist Schönheit Funktion. Eleganz dann wenn Klarheit sichtbar ist und die Uhr einen Nutzen hat.

Now to Edgar's question. We think that Ludwig has created a distinct design idiom for ochs und junior. The mese, like almost all the others, is shorn of any form of alphanumeric information…

Is ochs und junior design? Maybe! The great thing is, that Oechslin hasn't had to look for it.

It has emerged from the simplicity of the solution, from the high degree of functionality. A watch from Ludwig Oechslin can only look the way it looks… logically logical. And now: everyone can have his or her colour! The tinta series is very flexible in that respect – no matter what dial and hand/index colours are chosen, the watch remains clearly an ochs und junior…We're risking nothing :-)

Es ist sichtbar was wir mit der Marke von ochs und junior wollen. Funktionelle, schöne und intelligente Uhren für Menschen welche sie nutzen wollen. Für Menschen welche eben gerade kein Logo in Schrift haben möchten, sondern die subtile Sprache der Gestaltung verstehen und diese interpretieren können. Eine kleine Nische ist das - sie wächst! ochs und junior wird geliebt oder auch nicht - dazwischen gibt es nichts und das ist gut so.

Ist ochs und junior Design? Vielleicht! Das wunderbare daran ist: Oechslin hat nichts gesucht.

What we like best about our work is the fact that we touch people. We've been presented with that wonderful work Das Bauhaus by Hans M. Wingler; we've received a Japanese wabi-sabi vase and a book on the concept; lovely people like Edgar post their new ochs und junior on Facebook. And Ludwig's spiral date indication came as the result of an observation made by a friend from Geneva (who also pointed out to us about how bad we were at French!). I'm now off on a two-week break with a warm feeling in my heart :-)

My thanks to all our ochs friends wherever they are! One more thing:

We noticed with the MIH Uhr watch, and now with ochs und junior, that a get-together of all these ochs-wearing friends would no doubt generate a vast amount of creativity and useful feedback and ideas. Fascinating people with fascinating stories. And because MIH and ochs und junior watches can only be bought direct, we know most of the wearers personally… Is that a luxury or what!! :-)

Die grösste Freude für unsere Arbeit ist es, dass wir Menschen berühren. Wir kriegen das wunderbare Buch "Das Bauhaus" verfasst von Hans M. Wingler geschenkt, erhalten eine japanische "Wabi-sabi" Vase und auch das Buch dazu. Gute Typen wie Edgar posten Ihre neue ochs und junior auf Facebook.

Thomas is our ochs und junior selene tester France! A standard test? Not quite!

He's now spent over two weeks paddling his SUP board from Geneva towards the Atlantic... He's currently around 180km from Bordeaux – and from there it's no longer far to the Atlantic!!

Swiss Television SF 2 covered the run-up to his departure. Now we bring you an e-mail interview:

Thomas ist der ochs und junior selene Tester in Frankreich. Ein normaler Test? Nicht ganz!

Er hat seinen Alltag reduziert und paddelt mit seinem SUP-Board nun schon seit über zwei Wochen von Genf in Richtung Atlantik... In der Zwischenzeit befindet sich Thomas etwa 180km vor Bordeaux - und von da ist es nicht mehr weit bis zum Atlantik!!

Der Schweizer Fernsehsender SF 2 hat es vor seiner Abreise getan, nun haben wir haben ihn per e-Mail interviewt:

Thomas, you've now been paddling for two weeks in your second attempt to reach the Atlantic. You're making good progress. What does time mean for you?

The kind of time I'm familiar at home going about my day-to-day business is gradually losing all meaning. I don't have meetings to go to, appointments to keep or obligations to fulfil. I have complete control over what I do and when I do it. I eat when I'm hungry, lie down when I'm tired, and I spend my time doing other things when I don't want to paddle anymore. It's a luxury to have complete control over one's time, and it's something I'm re-learning on this trip.

What do you think about during your hours of paddling? How tough is the paddling?

I paddle an average of 12 hours a day. Plenty of time to think about things! That said, I don't really think about much while I'm actually paddling. Rather, I free my mind and focus on what I'm doing. I listen to my body – I have to be absolutely focused on achieving my daily targets and need to know what my physical limits are; I have to be careful not to let my ambition get the better of me. The day-to-day challenges tend to be exacerbated by the weather – that's really what it's all about. Head and side winds can quickly make the going tough and rob me of all pleasure. But it's not always like that, and the wind can't always be blowing in the wrong direction.

Thomas Du paddelst nun, auf Deinem zweiten Versuch den Atlantik zu erreichen, seit 2 Wochen und kommst gut voran. Wie empfindest Du Zeit?

Die Zeit wie ich sie von meinem Alltag zu Hause kenne verliert immer mehr an Bedeutung.Weder Termine noch Verpflichtungen leiten mein tägliches Handeln. Ich kann wieder über meine Lebenszeit selber bestimmen und handeln. So esse ich, wenn ich Hunger habe,lege mich hin, wenn ich müde bin und wenn ich keine Lust zum Paddeln habe, so verbringe ich eben meine Zeit mit anderen Tätigkeiten. Vollkommen frei über meine Zeit zu bestimmen, ist ein Luxus, den ich auf meiner Reise wieder erlernen darf.

Was denkst Du während den stundenlangen Paddelsessions? Wie hart und anstrengend ist das was Du da machst?

Durchschnittlich paddle ich ca. 12 Stunden pro Tag. Eine lange Zeit in der man sich Gedanken machen könnte. Doch eigentlich denke, ich während dem Paddeln kaum über welche Sachen nach. Ich bin viel eher frei von Gedanken und gebe mich ganz meinem Handeln hin. Dabei horche ich Wachsam auf meinen Körper denn nur so kann ich mit eisernen Wille meine Tagesziele erreichen und körperliche Grenzen erkennen, welche ich mit meiner Motivation nicht überschreiten sollte. Die täglichen Strapazen sind dabei vor allem bei widrigen Wetterbedingungen extrem und gehen an die Substanz. Vor allem Gegen- und Seitenwinde können einem ganz schnell die Freude an der Sache verderben.Aber so ist es nun einmal im Alltag und schlussendlich kann der Wind ja nicht immer aus der falschen Richtung blasen.

Are things panning out as you expected them to or have you had surprises on the way?

What really surprised me was how hard it was to get food on the stretch down the Rhone. Although there were plenty of villages on the banks, the shops tended to be far away and way out of reach. Finding food on the Canal du Midi is easier in that respect: you can find snacks at almost every lock.

Are you meeting people? How do they respond when they find out what you're doing?

I get lots of waves from people in their houseboats on the Canal du Midi. Most contact tends to be fleeting, though. Those people I do speak to are fascinated by my idea – I fancy I can detect in their eyes a longing for adventure such as mine. To be free, if only for a few days.

How do you go about eating?

After the Rhone odyssey, finding food on the Canal du Midi is a delight. Because of the many houseboats and the canal tourism, there are plenty of restaurants and shops close to the water.

Hast Du Dir Deine Reise so vorgestellt oder wirst Du mit Überraschungen konfrontiert?

Überrascht hat mich sicher, dass es extrem schwierig war auf der Rhône-Etappe sich mit Lebensmittel zu versorgen. Zwar hatte es viele Dörfer mit Einheimischen am Flussufer, doch die Einkaufszentren lagen meist weit ausserhalb und unerreichbar für mich. Die Verpflegung auf dem Canal du Midi ist dafür umso einfacher und an fast jeder Schleuse gibt es die Möglichkeit einen Happen zu essen.

Kommst Du mit Menschen in Kontakt? Wie reagieren Sie auf Dein Abendteuer?

Auf dem Canal du Midi grüssen mich viele Leute von ihren Hausbooten und winken mir zu. Meist bleibt es aber bei einer flüchtigen Begrüssung. Die Leute mit denen ich ins Gespräch kommen sind alle fasziniert von meiner Idee und ich mein in ihren Augen immer etwas Sehnsucht zu sehen, selber so ein Abenteuer zu starten. Frei zu sein, auch wenn nur für ein paar Tage.

Wie kommst Du mit dem Essen klar?

Nach der Odyssee auf der Rhône ist die Verpflegung auf dem Canal du Midi eine wahre Freude. Durch die vielen Hausboote und den dadurch entstandenen Tourismus, hat es unzählige Restaurants und viele Einkaufsmöglichkeit in unmittelbare nähe zum Fluss.

How are your muscles and joints? As we speak, the Tour de France is on: three weeks of cycling – but the athletes get regular massages… How do you relax?

So far, so good – no real strains to report. I have a hardened muscle in the back and a swollen tendon in the middle finger of my right hand – they give me slight problems every now and then, but that's all. Apart from that I'm in good shape, which is good. I'd have to abort my trip if that wasn't the case. I would never pump myself full of medicines just to be able to reach the Atlantic. I've taped up the troublesome joint, but I wouldn't take painkillers or things like that, as that would prevent me from knowing where my limits are. I have nothing to prove and no tour to win! All I have to do is live my life the way I feel it should be lived. Free from thoughts of performance and the pressures of society. When I feel tired I go to sleep, and if that doesn't refresh me, I have to change something about the way I do things.

And if I wake up too early in the morning every once in a while, I just need to look at my watch to know I can happily turn over and go back to sleep for a few more hours. No flickering mobile phone display, just two simple hands that impart relaxation and wellbeing.

You're wearing your selene Tinta every day of your arduous trip. You are without a doubt the most active wearer of an ochs und junior watch! What has your selene been telling you during your long paddling days?

Well, for a start, I'm glad to say it hasn't been telling me any stories. It would be a sign of sunstroke if it did ;-)) What I can say, though, is that my selene Tinta (with its misspelt "bonne voyage" inscribed on the back!) is a major part of my venture. It's a tiny technical marvel, unique in its moonphase complication. It goes its own way in the world of watchmaking. It was born out of an ambition to create something amazing – and that's the way it's turned out. It's an embodiment of how life is. Have ideas and dreams, no matter how grand they are. Hang onto them and grow with them as you go about making them a reality. Don't always go down the well-trodden path. Find your own way into the world and deep inside yourself. Be unique, yet remain part of humanity... if my selena Tinta could speak, that's what it would say.

Du trägst Deine selene Tinta jeden Tag und machst Extremsport damit. Du bist definitiv der aktivste Träger einer ochs und junior! Was erzählt Dir die Uhr auf Deinen langen Paddeltagen?

Nun gut Geschichten im eigentlichen Sinne erzählt mir die Uhr zum Glück noch nicht. Sonst hätte ich wohl definitiv zu lange unterer der prallen Sonne gepaddelt ;-)) Doch egal ob mit oder ohne Sonnenstich so ist mein selena Tinta alias "bonne voyage" ein wichtiger Bestandteil meiner Geschichte. Ein kleines, technisches Wunderwerk, das einzigartig in ihrer Umsetzung, seinen eigenen Weg in der Uhrmacherwelt geht. Aus einer anfangs verrückten Idee geboren zur Vollendung entwickelt. Das für mich der Inbegriff des Lebens. Habe Ideen und Träume - mögen Sie noch so verrückt sein. Halte an ihnen fest und wachse mit ihnen, indem du sie in der Realität umsetzt. Gehe nicht immer nur Pfade, welche bereit alle anderen gegangen sind. Suche auch einmal deinen eigenen Weg in die Welt hinaus und tief in dich hinein. Sei einzigartig und bleibe trotzdem ein Bestandteil der Masse...wenn meine selena Tinta alias "bonne voyage" sprechen könnte,ich denke, das würde sie mir mit auf meinen Weg geben.

Und wenn ich dann einmal am Morgen zu früh erwachse, so reicht ein Blick auf meine "Bonne Voyage" und sie zeigt mir sanft, dass ich noch ein paar Stunden schlafen kann. Kein flimmernder Handy Display, sondern zwei simple Zeiger, die mir in diesem Augenblick Entspannung und Wohlgefallen schenken.

How does the selene feel on your wrist during your exertions?

Great – I don't feel it at all. The natural caoutchouc strap is comfortable in the heat and is very strong. I don't know how many times I've caught it on my backpack or wherever, and the watch and strap just shrug it off. So far the watch has withstood temperatures above 30°C, as well as rain and canal water. It's here for ever!

Has anyone commented on the watch and its lack of branding?

I go so quickly past the houseboats, all they see is an orange streak ;-)) Although I see plenty of people during the day, the contacts tend to be fleeting. I'm not sure I know enough French to explain the unique workings of the moonphase complication…

Wie ist der Tragkomfort unter diesen Extrembelastungen?

Sehr gut, ich spüre die Uhr eigentlich nie. Der Kautschuk-Bändel trägt sich auch bei Hitze angenehm und ist vor allem ist extrem stabil. Schon dutzende Male bin ich an meinem Rucksack oder sonst wo hängen geblieben die selena Tinta steckt das mit einem Zeigerzwinkern weg. Weder Hitze über 30 Grad, Regen oder die Kanalbrühe auf dem Canal du Midi kann ihr etwas anhaben. Eine Uhr für die Ewigkeit.

Haben Leute schon reagiert auf die ungewöhnliche und nicht gebrandete Uhr?

Ich flitze so schnell an den Hausbooten vorbei, da sehen die Leute nur noch einen Orangen Streifen ;-)) Ich komme zwar immer wieder mit Leuten in Kontakt, doch während des Tages sind das meist nur flüchtige Begegnungen. Ich glaube, mein Französisch wäre dann auch ganz schnell am Ende, wenn ich die einzigartige Funktion der Mondphase erklären müsste...

The hands and indices, meanwhile, come in ten variations, all coated in a luminous material (free from radio activity!). The lighter colours are very luminous, the darker ones less so. As for me, I'm learning from him… :-) Here are all ten hand/index colours:

Farbwahl! ochs und junior Tinta und all diese Möglichkeiten: Für das Zifferblatt kann jede Farbe aus dem Pantone Farbfächer ausgesucht werden. Für die Zeiger und die dazugehörigen Indizies gibt es 10 verschiedene Varianten. Alle in nachtleuchtendem Superluminova (natürlich frei von jeglicher Radioaktivität!). Helle Zeiger leuchten stark, die dunklen natürlich etwas weniger. Zum Auswählen am Besten bei uns in Luzern vorbeikommen, ein e-Mail schreiben oder anrufen... Thomas on the Mediterranean! | Thomas am Mittelmeer!

Thomas has now reached the Mediterranean! It was exactly one week ago that he started his second attempt to get to the Atlantic surf aboard his SUP board.

His wrist is now better and his stomach is now able to cope with waves and picnics!

Having already paddled from Mollis via Basel and on to Mulhouse in France and further along the contaminated canals there, this time he started in Geneva.

Despite dramatic south winds with storm warnings and wind speeds of up to 100 km/h (60 mph), he's making good progress.

Thomas ist eben am Mittelmeer angekommen! Vor exakt einer Woche hatte er seinen zweiten Versuch gestartet um mit dem SUP-Board die erste Welle am Atlantik zu erreichen.

Sein Handgelenk ist ausgeheilt, sein Magen verträgt wieder Wellengang und Sportlerpicknick.

Satt noch einmal den ganzen Weg von Mollis über Basel, dann weiter an Mühlhausen vorbei durch die komplett verdreckten Kanäle zu paddeln, ist er diesmal in Genf gestartet.

Das geht nun, trotz dramatischen Mistral Winden mit Sturmwarnungen und Windgeschwindigkeiten bis zu 100km/h, flott voran.

It goes without saying that our adventurer can guess what's awaiting him in the Atlantic. His board is buffeted by sidewinds due to the pack strapped to it.

Eating remains a challenge. The Rhone Canal was amazingly quiet, and many of the villages Thomas passed were equally devoid of life.

There were very few eateries along the way, and those that he did come across were beyond his budget.

Natürlich ahnt unser Abendteurer, was in so etwa auf dem Atlantik erwarten könnte. Das Brett reagiert mit dem Gepäckaufbau relativ sensibel auf Seitenwind.

Immer noch ist das Essen eine Herausforderung. Der Rhone Kanal war erstaunlicherweise eher ausgestorben und an den Ufern passierte Thomas Dörfer, welche wie ausgestorben wirkten.

Ufernahe Restaurants traf er eher selten und sind natürlich nicht mit dem aktuellen Reisebudget zu vereinbaren.

To improve the situation, Thomas Oschwald has thought up an ingenious plan! For every CHF 50 donated to his travel account, he will fish out one kilo of rubbish from our waterways. These days he can see just how necessary that is. Donate, dear friends! He needs to make progress and clear out all that rubbish… :-)

And the ochs und junior selene? Perfect! Very comfortable on the wrist and proving more than a match for all his adventures…

Lovingly branded on the back of the ochs und junior leather strap! That's how we do it... We source our leather from Ecopell in southern Germany. The cattle lead a good life in meadows no more than 500 km away. The company uses natural tanning agents such as tara, valonea oak and even rhubarb tubers. Unlike conventional tanneries, they do not use poisonous chrome.

And because the straps, in all their varied colours, feel so good on the wrist, we have them hand-stitched by Camille Fournet:

Having paddled his SUP board for only a week, Thomas Oschwald has had to abandon his attempt to traverse France, follow its coastline to Holland then make his way back to Switzerland down the Rhine – for now at least. On reaching Montbéliard, he was struck down by what appears to be some kind of virus and was unable make any further headway. Our ochs und junior selene has so far managed to survive France's highly polluted canal water and helped our valiant friend tell the time during sleepless nights.

The watch's readability and comfort were, he reports, first class, even when he was paddling hard.

Thomas will let the world know what his plans are in the next two weeks. He is thinking about whether to modify his plans in the coming weeks and months and change his route.

Either way, the selene Tinta will stay on his wrist, ready for the next instalment of his adventure ...

Eine Woche paddeln! Leider musste Thomas Oschwald seinen Versuch, Europa auf dem SUP- Board zu umrunden, nach einer Woche abbrechen. Auf der Höhe von Montbéliard waren die gesundheitlichen Probleme (vermutlich eine Viruserkrankung) zu gross, um an ein gesundes und vernünftiges Weiterkommen zu denken. Die ochs und junior selene hat das massiv verschmutzte Wasser der französischen Kanäle bestens weg gesteckt und war in schlaflosen Nächten die leuchtende Orientierung.

Lesbarkeit und Tragekomfort, auch während der körperlichen Belastung, war ausgezeichnet.

Thomas wird innerhalb der nächsten zwei Wochen informieren. Er überlegt sich, ob er sein Projekt in den kommenden Wochen und Monaten teilweise adaptiert und auf eine andere Route ausweicht.

Die selene Tinta auf jeden Fall bleibt an seinem Handgelenk und wir sind gespannt bei welchen Abenteuern sie sonst noch mit von der Partie sein wird...

Bon voyage, Thomas! This is the ochs und junior selene Tinta that Thomas Oschwald is wearing on his epic journey, which started last Saturday. His very, very long trip is due to take him to the Atlantic and back…

His selene is the third we have built (Ludwig and I have been wearing ours since March) and his wearing it represents the final test for this amazing example of complex mathematics. Although the maths are advanced, the moonphase complication actually consists of just five components in the form of epicyclic (or planetary) gearing – and that includes the dial. This is the most accurate moonphase complication ever to be incorporated in a wristwatch.

Thomas will be reporting back to us every now and then on how he's getting on with it, its readability and functionality – and of course its durability, faced with such a tough challenge…

The colours he chose for his selene Tinta are a navy-blue dial with orange indices. The strap, of course, is natural caoutchouc.

Off on Sunday! | Am Sonntag geht's los!

Last-minute preparations on Lake Walen for the big journey! Initial trial wearing of the ochs und junior selene. And our trading name on the rear of the board! Thomas asked us whether we wanted to appear on his board. ochs und junior doesn't advertise as such – but Thomas's venture is so unusual that we thought we should be part of it. What you see above is the only ochs und junior sticker in the world… ;-)

Letzte Vorbereitungen am Walensee für die grosse Reise! Erstes Probetragen der ochs und junior selene. Und am Schwanz des Brettes der Ochse! Thomas hatte uns noch etwas kritisch gefragt ob wir überhaupt werbetechnisch auf seinem Board sein möchten. Nun, wir machen mit ochs und junior eher nicht die Werbung im eigentlichen Sinne - nur das Projekt ist schon sehr toll und darum freuen wir uns über den einzigen ochs und junior Kleber der weltweit existiert... ;-)

Thomas is having to stow around 50 kg of luggage in two waterproof packs on his board. The tent is ultralight, as is the sleeping bag. Ahead of him, five months of wild camping!

Etwa 50kg Gepäck wird Thomas verstaut in zwei wasserdichten Behältern auf seinem Brett festzurren. Das Zelt ist ultraleicht, der Schlafsack ebenso. 5 Monate wildes Campieren stehen dem verwegenen Burschen bevor.

The moonphase selene will help keep his motivation up! Our watchmaker Lukas is spending the last week testing it for watertightness by warming it up then plunging it into cold water. This particular watch is one of only three currently in existence (Ludwig and I are wearing the other two). Thomas's trip will be the ultimate test for our mathematical wonder. The small number of parts used for the moonphase complication should ensure that there aren't any hiccups… We'll be blogging about Thomas Oschwald's exploits during the course of his marathon trip.

Die selene wird sein Motivationsgerät fürs Handgelenk! Noch testet Lukas die letzte Woche fertig gewordene Monduhr auf Wasserdichtheit - auch mit einem Heizgerät und anschliessender Abschreckung im kalten Wasser. Natürlich sind wir etwas auf dem letzten Zacken fertig geworden mit der erst dritten selene (Ludwig und ich tragen je eine). Es wird also der ultimative Test für unser mathematisches Wunderding werden. Die wenigen Teile der Funktion sind die optimale Ausgangslage das eben alles einfach funktioniert... Wir werden auch über die Erfahrungen von Thomas Oschwald auf auf dem Ochsenblog berichten.

Thomas will be leaving Elm on Saturday and spending the night at the campsite in Weesen on Lake Walen. He'll then set off on his epic journey on Sunday.

Anyone living on Lake Zurich should look out for him and shout out encouragements!!

Sunday evening looks like being very warm (24 Celsius), maybe with a shower or two. But that won't stop Thomas! Just wait for the Atlantic storms…

How do you get from Mollis in Switzerland's Canton Glarus to Basel? By train, car, or maybe even bike… Thomas Oschwald has thought up a somewhat more original way. Via waterways. And because there's no direct water link between Mollis and Basel, he's taking a detour – via the Atlantic!

Wie kommt man von Mollis im Glarnerland nach Basel? Per Bahn, Auto auch mit dem Fahrrad wäre eine Möglichkeit... Thomas Oschwald hat sich eine originellere Variante ausgedacht. Alles auf dem Wasser. Und nachdem es keine direkte Wasserlinie von Mollis nach Basel gibt führt der Weg an den Atlantik und zurück.

To be precise, his goal is not Basel but a perfect wave on the wild French Atlantic coast. And to make sure he's earned it, Thomas is setting off early in June from where he lives near Glarus and paddling along rivers, canals and shorelines in a westerly direction. All standing on his SUP board (stand-up paddling board).

Genau genommen ist das Ziel auch nicht Basel, sondern eine perfekte Welle an der wilden französischen Atlantikküste. Und damit die auch so richtig verdient wird, die Welle startet Thomas Anfang Juni von seiner Wohngemeinde Mollis aus und reist alles auf Flüssen und Seen in Richtung Westen. Stehend auf seinem Stand Up Surfbrett.

To start with, the idea was to "only" to paddle to the Atlantic, but then we saw the atmospheric pictures of his winter training on Lake Klöntal. We were intrigued by his idea of a solo adventure without a lot of money, and starting from his front door.

Am Anfang war die Idee eben "nur" an den Atlantik zu paddeln und dann haben wir seine wunderschönen Bilder von seinem Wintertraining am Klöntalersee gesehen. Die Idee ein Abenteuer ohne viel Geld, ohne Begleitung und mit Start vor der Haustüre zu erleben faszinierte uns.

Sponsorship from a watch company? Surely not! That wouldn't be ochs und junior! But he is taking one of our watches with him. Just that. A small chapter in a long story.

The watch Thomas is taking on his epic trip (featuring up to ten hours a day of stand-up paddling) is the ochs und junior selene Tinta. It should help keep him motivated during the endeavour.

Abenteurersponsoring einer Uhrenfirma? Natürlich nicht! Das wäre nicht ochs und junior! Eine Uhr wird mit auf die Reise gehen. Nur das. Ein kleiner Teil einer langen Geschichte.

He's now decided to continue the trip clockwise back to Switzerland! Mollis, Zurich, Geneva, Bordeaux, the Atlantic coast northwards, the English Channel eastwards, Rotterdam, south up the Rhine – to Basel.

Nun geht es im Uhrzeigersinn wieder zurück in die Schweiz! Mollis, Zürich, Genf, Bordeaux, am Atlantik an der Bretagne vorbei nach Rotterdam und den Rhein hoch wieder nach Basel.

The whole venture is around 5000 km in length!!! It can only be described in superlatives – rather like the selene…

The moonphase of the watch is so accurate that it will take 3478.27 years for it to be out by one day :-).

And because the moon exerts an immense influence on the Atlantic's tides, it makes sense to have a moonphase watch to keep an eye on mood swings, too.

Etwa 5000km werden das!!! Ein sensibler Superlativ, leise und gut. So wie die selene...

Der Mond wird erst nach 3478.27 Jahren ein Tag daneben liegen - so rein rechnerisch :-).

Und da am Atlantik der Mond einen riesen Einfluss auf die Tidenhübe hat und so eine Mondphase auch praktisch ist um Stimmungsschwanken :-) zu erklären geht sie mit auf die Reise.

The watch won't receive any special waterproofing measures – just an engraving on the back. Thomas will report on his experience with the selene via Facebook, even if something goes wrong with it. That's because we don't want future owners or their watches to have to go through what Thomas is about to do…

Original ohne spezielles Wasserdichtheitsprogramm einfach mit einer Gravur auf der Rückseite. Thomas wird uns seine Erfahrungen mit der selene per Facebook berichten, auch wenn etwas schief gehen sollte mit der Uhr. Denn: solche Strapazen wünschen wir ansonsten weder zukünftigen Besitzern noch deren Uhren...

The plan is for the venture to kick off on June 2! Thomas would be very pleased to receive help and encouragement on his trip to the Atlantic and back. To make a skateboard, you first have to glue fibreglass mats onto an ebony core using epoxy adhesive and then subject the sandwich it to pressure overnight.

Glasfasermatten mit Epoxi auf den Ebenholzkern kleben und dann ab in die Presse, eine ganze Nacht lang.

You then saw it, mill it and…

Aussägen, Fräsen und...

… sand it. All by hand!

... schleifen. Handarbeit!

Time to remove the protective film and add the tape, axles and wheels – and go for a trial run.

Zum Schluss die Schutzfolien abziehen. Tape, Achsen und Rollen montieren und ab zur Probefahrt.
And Matze? As an itinerant tradesman, he'll be moving on in a few weeks. He's currently helping Christof make skateboards, and then – who knows where his journeyman's life will take him…

Und Matze? Der reist als Geselle in ein paar Wochen weiter. Zur Zeit hilft er Christof Bretter bauen und dann - wer weiss wo ihn seine Reise hinführt...

He came third in a Cartier watchmaking competition during his training, then spent a further year honing his skills with Paul Gerber in Zurich. He's blessed with an innate sense of curiosity, which makes him a very valuable member of the ochs und junior team.

He does all kinds of things, such as servicing the watch brands retailed by Embassy (including the MIH watch) – and, as mentioned, assembles many of our watches. All this in Lucerne, Switzerland's loveliest town… ;-)

Der dritte Preis bei einem Cartier Konstruktionswettbewerb während der Ausbildung zum Uhrmacher, ein Jahr Arbeit bei Paul Gerber in Zürich und jede Menge Neugierde machen unseren jungen Uhrmacherpunk zum wertvollen ochs und junior Teammitglied.

Sein Alltag ist abwechslungsreich. Fithalten der grossen Markenauswahl bei Embassy, Service an MIH Uhren und eben Uhrenbauen. Und dies alles in Luzern - der schönsten Stadt der Schweiz... ;-)

Mathematical masterstroke | Mathematische Meisterleistung...

What's romantic about maths? It's all in the mind – especially that of our universal scholar Ludwig Oechslin as he lowers his pince-nez down his nose and applies himself to his thousands of calculations.

Page after page of numbers, all with one aim: to achieve the most precise indication possible.

He's been working on redefining that most romantic of displays in a wristwatch – the moon phase indication. Here's the first picture of the almost finished ochs und junior selene tinta – the third of our coloured watches…

Was ist das Romantische an Mathematik? Nun vielleicht die Vorstellung wie unser Universalgelehrte Ludwig Oechslin seinen Zwicker auf dem Nasenrücken etwas weiter nach unten positioniert und sich über ein Blatt voller Kalkulationen beugt.

Rechnung nach Rechnung systematisch untersucht mit einem Ziel: eine möglichst genaue Anzeige zu erschaffen.

Und alles um die romantische Anzeige in einer Armbanduhr neu zu definieren - die der Mondphase! Hier das erste Foto der fast fertigen ochs und junior selene tinta - der 3. Farbuhr...

Ludwig's minimalistic solution has emerged from a series of moon phase prototypes

Oechslin: "My luna 7 is exactly two seconds out per lunation, which is equivalent to one day in 1,270,411.5 days or 43,020.189 lunations or 3,478.27 years!"

His solution is, in other words, utterly accurate – but it's also mind-blowingly simple in its pared-down minimalism! Where a watch designer would normally use between 20 and 30 individual components to achieve a conventional moon phase indication, Ludwig has managed it with just five! Moreover the precision he has achieved is around three times greater than the other already very precise indications. In short: pure mechanical romanticism!

Oechslins puristische Lösung ist aus einer Reihe von Protoypen zum Thema Mondphase entstanden.

Oechslin: "Die luna 7 geht pro lunation um gerade 2 sekunden falsch, somit um einen tag nach 1270411.5 tagen oder 43020.189 lunationen oder 3478.27 jahren."

Die Sache ist somit extrem genau und in seiner puristischen Einfachheit verblüffend genial! Wo ein Uhrmacher normalerweise etwa 20 bis 30 einzelne Teile für eine "normale" Mondphasenanzeige benötigen, realisiert das Ludwig mit gerade mal deren 5! Die Genauigkeit ist dann etwa 3 mal genauer als die anderen sehr genauen Lösungen. Also: pure mechanische Romantik!

Astronomical timepieces possess epicyclic or planetary gearing – a gear system consisting of one or more outer 'planet' gears revolving about a central 'sun' gear.
Ludwig: "Two inputs are combined to create a differential, i.e. an output that is the difference between the inputs.

The differential movement allows for finer tuning than direct drive gearing."
The little wheel below left in the photo turns within the toothing of the outer annulus of the dial. It is driven by the little wheel below right in the photo, which in turn is driven by the third of the little wheels (the one with the finger). This latter wheel is positioned on the hour rod that moved the hour hand. All these parts are integrated within the titanium disk and thus cause it to rotate – very, very precisely!

Ludwig systematically examined more than 1000 fractions for their usability, ending up with a shortlist of around 25. These resulted in a number of castings, and the end result represents an outcome offering the best ratio of accuracy to feasibility.

Astronomische Uhren verfügen über Epizyklische Getriebe als Planetengetriebe oder Differentiale.

Oechslin: "Zwei Differenzen werden gegeneinander ausgespielt - es ergibt sich ein Differential.
Die Differentialbewegung ist feiner abstimmbar als bei einem direkten Antrieb."

In der feinen Innenverzahnung des Zifferblattes dreht sich das kleine Zahnrad (unten links im Bild) ab. Es bekommt seine Kraft vom kleinen Zahnrad unten rechts, dieses wiederum wird vom dritten kleinen Teil (das mit dem Finger) mit einem Impuls versorgt. Dieser kommt direkt vom Stundenrohr auf dem auch der Stundenzeiger sitzt. All diese Teile sind in der Titanscheibe integriert und bewirken das sich diese dreht - sehr sehr genau!

Über 1000 Brüche hat Ludwig systematisch auf Ihre Brauchbarkeit untersucht. Daraus resultierten etwa 25, welche in die engere Auswahl kamen. Wie es heute so geht bei diesen "Castings" setzte sich die beste Kalkulation durch. Diese nämlich welche in einem möglichst guten Verhältnis zwischen Präzision und Machbarkeit stand.

When the orange dot is added to the dial at 12 o'clock and the circular full moon and new moon indentations in the titanium disk are filled with pigment, what you have is the selene tinta – the world's most mathematically accurate moon phase indication ever offered in a wristwatch.

Resourceful readers of this blog will have worked out what the above is all about… These five components interact to produce a precise definition of the moon. We have just sent off the two first two trial dials to Cador for colouring: dark blue with orange indices… This moon phase watch will have a deviation of no more than two seconds per lunation, i.e. it's extremely accurate! We described just how accurate it is in an earlier blog describing the luna prototype no. 7. We'll of course be coming back to it in detail! The sun also has something to do with it… What are we going to call this wristwatch? What name does Ludwig Oechslin have in mind in his series of calendar complications?

Findige Ochsenblog Leser haben es herausgefunden und richtig interpretiert... Es geht bei den 5 Teilen um die präzise Definition des Mondes. Eben haben wir die beiden ersten Versuchszifferblätter an Cador zur Lackierung geschickt. Dunkelblau mit orangefarbenen Indizies... Pro Lunation wird diese Monduhr genau 2 Sekunden Abweichung haben - das ist sehr sehr genau! Wie präzise das ist hatten wir bereits mal anhand unseres Mondprototypen Nr. 7 beschrieben. This is our idealised view of an ideas workshop. As you would expect, things aren't quite like that: here at ochs und junior, our creativity stretches over quite a distance in Switzerland.

From La Chaux-de-Fonds, via Hinwil to the uplands of Zurich, a little graphical detour to Frauenfeld, watchmaking craftsmanship in Zurich City – and the whole lot flows to Lucerne, where it's all put together.

That's how it goes! We thought you'd like to see what we imagine it could be like to brainstorm in a charming, old factory building, so we asked Sjoerd to sketch one up for our website…

We're doing away with the lovely Citroën DS (and its propellor!) in the new website and putting the trailer away. We're getting the website ready to accept our new additions – the tinta is one of them. The photos will be along soon!

Hier ist sie, die Ideenskizze unserer Idealvorstellung einer Ideenwerkstatt. Natürlich bündeln wir unsere kreativen Ideen bei ochs und junior über einige geografische Distanz.

Von La Chaux-de-Fonds über Hinwil im Zürcher Oberland, den zeichnerischen Abstecher nach Frauenfeld, Uhrmacherkompetenz aus Zürich und alles läuft in Luzern zusammen.

Purchasers of ochs und junior watches are special people! Ludwig Oechslin's watches provide opportunities for many an enjoyable encounter – some very useful. Some time back, one ochs devotee, for instance, wondered if there would be a more elegant way to fit the 31 date apertures into the space taken by 30 – Ludwig thought up his date spiral. We experience real cross-fertilisation through our ideas, our visions and our products.

A few days ago we had the pleasure of handing over a completed luna mese.

Unlike mine (see photo), the new purchaser has a personalised version featuring a heat-patinated moon disk at the centre and a white gold representation of Earth. We actually made two of these lunation wheels by machining them after heating them in the oven. We discovered just how hard this makes the material – we broke six tools in the milling process! Our latest purchaser's watch is a one off, due to a tiny scratch on the moon disk and a couple of heat marks on the dial – not forgetting the natural patination (i.e. life!) that will soon start to make its mark on the solid silver case. The title of this blog (wabi-sabi) refers to the book we received from this Japan expert. ochs und junior may well be wabi-sabi… it's certainly a fascinating interpretation of our philosophy! Many thanks for the insight, and we wish our new friend every success with his new luna mese!

Vor ein paar Tagen durften wir, eine eben fertiggestellte, luna mese überreichen.

Im Unterschied zu meiner Uhr auf dem Bild, trägt der neue Besitzer seine persönliche Monduhr

mit einer hitzepatinierten Mondscheibe im Zentrum und einem Erdtrabanten in Weissgold. Zwei solcher Lunationscheiben haben wir, nach dem Erhitzen im Ofen, mit dem Fräser nachbearbeitet. Nur so nebenbei erwähnt, fielen der Übung sechs Bearbeitungswerkzeuge zum Opfer - die Oberfläche wird durch den Prozess extrem hart. Kleine Kratzer auf der Mondscheibe, ein paar Hitzeflecken auf dem Zifferblatt, ein baldiges Einsetzen der Patinierung des Silbergehäuses machen diese Uhr zum individuellen Einzelstück! Mit dem Hinweis auf Wabi-sabi haben wir vom Japankenner dieses Buch geschenkt bekommen. Vielleicht ist ochs und junior Wabi-sabi... Eine spannende Reflektion auf unser Tun! Colours! Here they are, the first variants of the ochs und junior tinta…

They've just come back from dial specialists Cador, and Ludwig Oechslin has grabbed for himself the dark green dial with the luminous green indices for his due ore – Lucas was given just an hour to do the swap-over, and right now (Jan 19, 2011 - 12.27 p.m.) the design brains behind ochs und junior is pacing the exhibition halls of the Geneva SIHH wearing his due ore tinta. Fabrizio, Embassy's stylish Italian salesman is wearing a dark-blue version with orange indices on a brown leather strap. It looks very cool…

Farbe! Hier sind sie, die ersten Varianten der ochs und junior tinta...

Druckfrisch von Cador angeliefert, hat sich Ludwig Oechslin das dunkelgrüne due ore Zifferblatt mit den grünen Superluminova Indizies geschnappt - Lukas hatte eine Stunde Zeit um es zu montieren und nun spaziert der Ochsenhäuptling in diesen Minuten (19.1.11 - 12.27 Uhr), mit seiner due ore tinta, durch die Hallen des SIHH in Genf. Fabrizio der stilvolle Italiener, Verkäufer bei Embassy trägt die dunkelblaue Version mit orangefarbenen Indizies und braunem Lederband. Es sieht sehr cool aus...

My watch of choice at the SIHH for the past two days has also been the due ore tinta, but mine has a grey-blue dial. Other than us, no one at the fair is offering colour that we could see. We've established a niche market! We loved Panerai's bronze watch that's designed to patinate over time. We were also reminded of earlier ideas of ours (see page 30 of the booklet that accompanies our watches) by the patinated Santoni leather straps offered by IWC with its new Portofino line.

So, what's next for the tinta concept? We're going to assemble and then photograph it. You'll see the first photos on this blog, followed by the website. We're already taking orders for the due ore tinta and mese tinta. The first editions (what you could call the final prototypes) are available in all kinds of colours by emailing me at bw@ochsundjunior.ch. To misquote the great HF: You can have any colour you want so long as it's ochs und junior…

Und mein Begleiter am SIHH die vergangenen zwei Tage war die due ore tinta mit grau-blauer Färbung. Farbe gab es am Salon ansonsten bei keinem Hersteller zu entdecken. Somit besetzen wir auch mit dieser Ochsenvariante eine Nische. Bei Panerai freuten wir uns über die Bronze Uhr welche innert kürzester Zeit herrlich patinieren wird. Auch an frühere Ideen erinnerten uns die patinierten Lederbänder von Santoni welche IWC bei der neuen Portofino Linie montiert... (siehe Seite 30 der Ochsengeschichte).

Wie geht es nun mit der Tinta weiter? Es wird nun montiert und dann fotografiert. Erste Fotos kommen in den Ochsenblog und später als neues Thema auf die Internetseite. Ab sofort sind die due ore und die mese tinta bestellbar. Die erste Edition, so etwa die finalen Prototypen, sind kaufbar (bw@ochsundjunior.ch) - und jede Farbe ab sofort zu bestellen... :-)

Best Supporting Actor… | Nebendarsteller...

Make way for a best supporting actor! As the actor taking the starring role is still with the make-up artist (and will be there for another two weeks or so), it's the supporting actor's turn to take a bow. He – or perhaps it's a she – will tell a story about a bit of a mix-up that has a happy ending. The story goes something like this:

Bühne frei für einen Nebendarsteller! Ist der angekündigte Hauptdarsteller noch gerade in der Maske und verzögert sich diese um den Moment von zwei Wochen springt er ein - der Nebendarsteller. Er oder in dem Fall eine sie erzählt die Geschichte einer Verwechslung welche ein gutes Ende nimmt. Die Geschichte geht etwa so:

Attentive blog-followers will have spotted the fact that so far we have only offered blurred pictures of the new tinta. We'll be showing it in all its glory as soon as the time is right. We're increasing the luminosity of the indices. The clasp is something else we haven't yet shown. Here it is! The new ochs und junior pin clasp is made by Peter Cantieni from the same titanium as used on the 42 mm case. Unlike the gold and steel clasps made by Cornu, this one adopts the same two-part approach as the case and, like the case, is left unpolished. It means you can admire the craft that goes into its making, with nothing re-touched.

Aufmerksamen Betrachtern des Ochsenblogs ist es aufgefallen... Die neue "tinta" wurde bis anhin in einer Unschärfe fotografiert. Wir zeigen die neue Ochsenuhr sobald alle Teile so sind wie wir uns das für den Moment vorstellen. Die Leuchtindizies werden noch kräftiger.

Auch die Schliesse haben wir bis anhin noch nicht abgelichtet. Hier ist sie nun! Die neue bei Peter Cantieni gefertigte ochs und junior Dornschliesse aus dem selben Titanium wie das 42mm Gehäuse. Anders als die bei Cornu gefertigten Gold oder Stahlteile sind diese in der gleichen Machart verarbeitet wie die zweiteiligen Schalen. Sichtbare Bearbeitungsspuren!

Sie zeigen die ganze Perfektion ohne etwas zu vertuschen.

So what's all this about a mix-up? Ludwig Oechslin uses a different clasp on the prototypes he makes – namely the one in the photo above.

Doch was ist nun die Geschichte mit der Verwechslung? Oechslin trägt an seinen Prototypen einen anderen Verschluss - nämlich diesen im Bild oben.

Similar to the clasp featured on the Swiss Army belt (incredibly durable, like all the army's gear) the leather part goes through the clasp and so needs no loop to hold it neatly in place.

Ähnlich dem Verschluss des Schweizer Militärgurtes (wie alle Ausrüstungsgegenstände des Schweizer Militärs ein unzerstörbares Teil) wird der Lederteil durch den Verschluss geführt und braucht somit keine Schlaufen. Es verrutsch somit nichts, alles ist am Ort.

Ludwig always sends his DXF design files to Peter Cantieni complete with all the variations. When Peter asked Ludwig for a sample, the latter sent him his favourite version in an envelope. This was, of course, not the same as the ones he had defined in the electronic files. So Peter made both. Oh, well!

Both clasps are wonderful. It means that ochs und junior now offers a choice of dial colours, of optional leather wallets – and now of clasps! The simple, easier-to-make one or the Oechslin Special! :-))

It could be that the quantity of straps we already have in our store won't be enough…

So as the year draws to a close we hand the stage over to the best supporting clasp. Its attractiveness has earned it its place in the limelight. We're looking forward to presenting the all-new ochs und junior mese tinta and due ore tinta – soon, have patience…

Those lucky owners of our anno cinquanta in silver will also be getting a belated New Year's present – in a few weeks' time they'll be receiving the new clasp in silver through the post…

A Happy New Year to one and all, dear friends!!

Oechslin pflegt seine elektronischen DXF Dateien jeweils komplett, mit allen bereits konstruierten Varianten an Peter Cantieni weiterzureichen. Dieser nun fragte den Meister für ein Muster an und der seinerseits schickte in einem Umschlag seine Lieblingsvariante! Obschon natürlich von der Kalkulationsabteilung etwas anderes beschlossen worden war. Nun gut!

Beide Schliessen sind wunderbar und so gibt es eben bei ochs und junior neben der Option der Zifferblattfarben, des optionalen Lederetuis eben auch die Wahl der Schliesse! Die schlichte und etwas einfacher herzustellende oder den Oechslin Special! :-))

Könnte sein, dass die paar bestehenden Lederbänder, welche wir schon an Lager haben, dafür nicht reichen werden - Ludwig täte es natürlich freuen...

Wir geben somit über das Jahresende die Bühne frei für den Nebendarsteller Schliesse. Schön wie sie ist hat sie sich den Platz verdient. Und freuen uns noch mehr, sehr bald, die ganze neue ochs und junior "mese tinta" oder "due ore tinta" zu zeigen - noch etwas Geduld also...

Für die Besitzer der ochs und junior anno cinquanta in Silber wird es noch ein Neujahrsgeschenk geben! Alle werden in ein paar Wochen die neue Schliesse, im gleichen Material wie die Uhr, per Post zugestellt bekommen...

Christmas and the New Year are just around the corner. Packing and wrapping days. That said, I'm not here to tell you what to do with your presents, but to philosophise about the packaging of watches…

Luxury is often defined through the use of (frequently relatively superficial) artifice. The quality of many wristwatches is often reflected in the expensive-looking, occasionally handmade and frequently large presentation boxes they come in. The sheer size of this packaging is a headache for the retailer, who hasn't the space for it all, and a delight for the new owner at the moment of the purchase. But then that over-sized packaging disappears into the bottom of a dusty cupboard, never to be seen again. So what's the point?

We think there's a better way to go about it!

Die Festtage stehen uns kurz bevor. Es sind die Tage des Verpackens. Doch, wir wollen uns nun nicht dem kunstvollen Geschenke verhüllen widmen, sondern etwas über das Einpacken von Uhren philosophieren...

Luxus wird meistens relativ vordergründig über eine luxuriöse Aufmachung sichtbar gemacht.

Gerade Armbanduhren definieren ihre Qualität über wertvolle, teilweise handgemachte, vielfach grosse Schatullen. Die Ausmasse dieser lassen zuerst den Juwelier, mit seinen immer knappen Platzverhältnissen erschauern, erfreuen dann im Moment des Kaufens den Besitzer um sich ein paar Wochen später im Keller wieder zu finden. Und was dann?

Wir denken es geht auch anders - zum Beispiel "mit Mehr InHalt"!

Everything about the MIH Uhr is high quality, though not high price. The pricing of the watch is extremely keen – so keen, in fact, that the cost of developing its annual calendar is not actually included in the price: the design has been made open source to allow other watchmakers to adopt the concept (who's going to be next?). ;-)

Ludwig Oechslin hit on a novel form of packaging for the packaging – it's something that has been attesting to Swiss quality on a daily basis for more than 250 years: the Neue Zürcher Zeitung newspaper! Wrap the watch in the paper, hand it to the buyer, he or she sticks it under their arm and walks out of the shop! It's what we do at Embassy, Lucerne, whenever we sell an MIH. A little piece of Velcro attaches the watch to the booklet it comes with, then the booklet is stuck to the NZZ with a blue sticker – and that's it. Cost: CHF 13.50.

If the owner unearths today's NZZ at the bottom of that dusty cupboard (next to the huge boxes of other watches…), he or she will remember 18 December 2010, the day the MIH watch was bought. Alternatively the newspaper can simply be recycled after it's been read.

Jeder Berührungspunkt der MIH Uhr sollte von hoher Qualität sein, allerdings nicht kostspielig. Die Kalkulation der Uhr ist extrem knapp und zudem ist die gesamte Entwicklung des Jahreskalenders nicht im Preis eingerechnet - es handelt sich dabei um eine Open Source

(mal sehen, welche Firma dies nächstens nutzt ;-)...).

Ludwig Oechslin dachte für die Hülle an den besten Artikel welcher in der Schweiz seit über 250 Jahren täglich von neuem Qualität beweist: Die Neue Zürcher Zeitung! Die Uhr in der Zeitung, diese unter dem Arm aus dem Geschäft spazieren. Etwa so stellte er sich den Verpackungsablauf des Jahreskalenders vor und so machen wir es. Jeden Tag, immer wenn bei Embassy jemand eine MIH Uhr kauft. Mit einem Klettpunkt wird die Uhr auf dem MIH-Büchlein fixiert. Der blaue Kleber wird auf die richtige Stelle der NZZ geklebt und fertig ist die Verpackung. Kosten: CHF 13.50.

Wird nach Jahren die Zeitung von heute neben einer der verstaubten Uhrenboxen von Neuem entdeckt, erinnert sich der Betrachter an eben diesen 18. Dezember 2010. An den Tag als die MIH Uhr gekauft wurde. Oder aber die Zeitung landete gleich im Altpapier und die Entsorgung wurde nach gescheiter Wissensvermehrung umgehend eingeleitet.

We're doing something similar at ochs und junior. The watches come with a booklet describing the background of ochs und junior and its watches. The children's watch (the settimana junior) gets a cartoon. An intuitive story that leaves plenty of room for the imagination while at the same time explaining how the watch works (the photo shows the settimana junior against one of the ten cartoon prototypes).

Ähnliches stimmiges stellten wir uns auch bei ochs und junior vor. Derart viele Geschichten können und wollen erzählt werden. Etwas davon sollte jede Uhr mitbekommen. Für die Kinderuhr sollte es ein Cartoon werden. Eine intuitive Geschichte welche Freiraum zur eigenen Interpretation lässt und dabei die Uhr präzise erklärt. (oben die settimana junior auf einem der 10 Cartoonprototypen)

The ochs und junior anno cinquanta takes a different approach. The booklet is printed on recycled paper and bound using recycled card, while the watch itself is presented in a handmade leather wallet. The wallet is really useful, as it can be used to safeguard other brands of watch, too.

Mehr Geschichte erzählen wir in Worten bei der ochs und junior anno cinquanta. Gedruckt auf Recyclingpapier, gebunden in einem ebenso wieder verwerteten Karton, gelangt der Jahreskalender im handgemachten Lederetui zum Besitzer. Die Etuis sind derart nützlich, dass auch schon klassische Uhren anderer Marken in solchen gelagert werden.

And now we have our tinta! One of the possible interpretations of the ochs und junior 'idea' concepts. What's the best way of presenting it? What ideas would flow into this version?

Each of the 'idea' watches has a large wooden stamp containing the instructions, the purchase date, the number of the colour of the dial (tinta only) and the URL of the ochs und junior website.

Jedes Uhrenthema hat seinen riesengrossen Holzstempel. Dieser wird auf dem grossen Stempelkissen aufgedrückt. Liebevoll von Hand, immer etwas unregelmässig...

We manually stamp the cardboard as carefully as possible (though it's never perfect!). The watches should be ready in February or thereabouts.

Die Gebrauchsanleitung, das Kaufdatum, im Falle der "tinta" die Farbnummer des Zifferblattes und den Verweis auf die ochs und junior Internetseite. Diese wird dann ab etwa Februar alle Details zur Neuheit in die weite Welt tragen.

Here's a picture of the first (almost) finished tinta in its 42 mm titanium case. We'll show you the definitive tinta in the next blog in a few days' time. It looks and feels amazing in the wrist. Very light, very immediate – people react very positively to it and its great to ski with – it's currently snowing in Lucerne!

Da liegt sie nun die erste (fast) fertige "tinta" im 42mm Titangehäuse. Und weil sie eben erst fast ganz fertig ist zeigen wir die ganze Uhr im nächsten Blogeintrag - so gegen Ende des ausklingenden Jahres...

Am Handgelenk auf jeden Fall trägt sie sich schon mal wunderbar. Sehr leicht, präsent, Leute reagieren auf die Uhr und Skilaufen damit ist perfekt... Es schneit in Luzern!

I forgot to tell you about the branding. the ochs und junior logo is burnt on (in classic branding fashion), embossed or stamped… Sure, it's whimsical, but that's typical of ochs und junior.

Ach ja, zum Schluss wird noch etwas branding betrieben. Denn wie wir es bis anhin immer gehalten haben: Das ochsenlogo wird nur gebrandmarkt, geprägt, punziert und eben gestempelt... Etwas eigenartig - eben ochs und junior.

Every colour will be available! Either complementary to the orange hands and indexes – or completely uncomplementary and downright provocative! The new 42 mm titanium watches from ochs und junior reflect your character, your outlook on life. Cador have sent us their first two sample dials, as a result of which we'll be intensifying the orange colour of the indexes.

Alle Farben werden möglich sein! Passend zu den orangefarbenen Zeigern und Indizies oder eben auch gerade provozierend unpassende! Die neuen 42 mm Titanuhren von ochs und junior bringen Stimmungen, Freude, Auswahl und Präferenzen auf das Gesicht der Uhr. Die ersten zwei Musterzifferblätter haben wir von Cador bekommen. Es wird noch etwas an der Colorierung der Indizies nachgefärbt (etwas stärker orangefarben).
The colour of the 'dash' marking indicating the date of the mese will also change. Messerli the watchmaker will be chamfering the first of the titanium cases today, fitting the crystals with gaskets and assembling the first watches. We'll be getting the rest of the coloured dial samples some time in December and assembling the watches accordingly. We can't wait to pass them onto Bea for the photo shoot!

Meanwhile we've been giving some thought to the colour personalisation of the watches. As I say, anything is possible! As you might expect, though, applying each colour to the dials involves time and effort… and then there's the question of how a customer chooses the exact shade – not everyone has a calibrated computer monitor capable of giving the exact colour.

Rot ist zur Zeit noch die orangefarbene Banane der mese - auch das ändert noch. Uhrmacher Messerli wird heute den Kantenbruch an den ersten Titangehäusen anbringen, Gläser mit den Dichtungen einpassen und die erste Uhr montieren. Im Laufe des Dezembers werden wir die restlichen Musterfarben bekommen und umgehend verbauen. Wir können es kaum erwarten, die gefärbten Uhren Bea fürs Fotoshooting zu überlassen!

In der Zwischenzeit machen wir uns noch ein paar Gedanken über die Art der Individualisierung. Wie beschrieben, es ist alles möglich! Natürlich ist der Aufwand für eine einzeln zu lackierende Farbe recht gross... Zudem ist die Frage, welcher Ochsenfreund alles über einen kalibrierten Bildschirm an seinem Mac oder PC verfügt, um die Farbe aufgrund einer Skala sicher wählen zu können?

We may well start by offering a basic palette of colours that look good and cover most people's tastes – chosen perhaps by the people who work at ochs und junior… Ludwig Oechslin will of course go for colours that best contrast with the hands for optimal readability; Sjoerd, given his nationality, will go for anything orange; I, meanwhile, have my own ideas…

We can create precise corporate colours for senior management, board members, patrons… or maybe for company staff, so that each time they look at our innovative and intelligent product they identify with their employer…

That's enough thinking aloud for now. Time to look forward to building the first tinta :-)

Nun, vielleicht wird es auch eine Grundausrüstung von sinnreichen Farbkombinationen geben, welche beispielsweise die Präferenzen einzelner ochs und junior Mitarbeiter widerspiegeln... Ludwig Oechslin will natürlich bestmöglichen Kontrast und perfekte Lesbarkeit, Sjoerd alles in Oranje und ich - habe auch meine Ideen...

It all started with the idea of a children's watch! The concept took a few minutes. Skin-friendly titanium, a natural rubber strap in case for when it got wet – and everything made in Switzerland. The lucky owner's name and address would be engraved on the back so the watch could be repatriated in the event they get separated. And all this packaged in a comic strip booklet. That was three years ago, and it signalled the arrival of Sjoerd in the ochs und junior family.

Am Anfang war die Idee einer Kinderuhr! Es war ein Konzept von ein paar Minuten. Aus hautverträglichem Titan sollte sie sein, ein Kautschukband falls die Uhr zum Waschen der Jeans in der Hosentasche so richtig nass werden würde und ganz sicher zu allen Teilen in der Schweiz gefertigt. Auf der Rückseite sollten alle Daten eingraviert werden, welche beim Verlorengehen des Zeitmessers diesen wieder zu seinem Besitzer führen. All dies sollte in ein Cartoon Büchlein eingepackt sein. Wir dachten damals, vor drei Jahren, an Sjoerd!

Aus der ochs und junior settimana junior mit ihrer wunderbaren Geschichte, des kleinen Jungen und dem zwickertragenden Uhrenwissenschaftler, entstand die Basis einer Kommunikation über Zeichnungen.

Sjoerd's cartoon Ludwig Oechslin complete with dangling pocket watch and orange dots buzzing around his head has become a character that communicates at a new level.

Der interpretierte Ludwig Oechslin mit seiner baumelnden Taschenuhr und den kreisenden orangefarbenen Punkten ist zu einer Figur geworden, welche auf einer neuen Ebene kommuniziert.

Each ochs und junior creation emerging from Ludwig's Treasure Chest of Ideas has its own illustration-based story. The genesis and making of the due ore is told in drawings. Illustrations explain how the date spiral that graces the mese came about and how Ludwig implemented the concept. As for the luna mese, the illustrations show how it works and the radical simplicity of the ultra-precise lunar mechanism…

Alle idea Uhren von ochs und junior haben ihre eigene gezeichnete Geschichte! Bei der due ore wird der Grund der Idee und die Art der Produktion erzählt. Die mese wiederum zeigt wie der Anstoss zum Denken der Datumsschnecke entstanden ist und wie Oechslin ihn umgesetzt hat. Bei der luna mese ist es die Funktion und die kinderleicht verständliche Technik der Monduhr welche erklärt wird...

An was zeichnet denn Sjoerd da nun die ganze Zeit rum?

There's a little clue top right… It's the continuation of a process that began sometime back, gained momentum with the MIH Watch and started becoming tangible with Ludwig's prototypes – now renamed Idea watches – which offer so much potential… Hmmm… :-)

We spent three hours planning, drawing and arranging our display for attendees at an Apple seminar. The whole 'idea flow' thing looked great, but we had to photograph it before it could be finished – our son's football match had to take precedence. It's called getting your family priorities right ;-)

Oben rechts im Bild ein kleiner Hinweis... Es ist der Lauf einer Entwicklung welche irgendwo beginnt, mit der MIH Uhr ihren Anfang nimmt und über Ludwigs Prototypen zu idea Uhren im Fluss interpretiert wird - immer mit ganz vielen offenen Möglichkeiten... Hmmm... :-)

Drei Stunden haben wir live geplant, gezeichnet und inszeniert, für Tagungsgäste der Firma Apple. Der fertige Ideenfluss sah toll aus, der Fussballmatch unseres Sohnes war dann allerdings Hinderungsgrund genug, das fertige Werk fotografieren zu können. Prioritäten des Lebens!

There's excitement in the air when new parts arrive in Lucerne from Peter's workshop! Until now, his deliveries were accompanied by heavily armed security personnel – that's when the dials were gold ;-)…

Now, though, he can relax a bit more. For one thing, the parts are fashioned from brass and titanium, which means that the value inherent in the work and in the materials is that much less… OK, so I'm exaggerating – the number of parts involved was never very large!

Here, then, is the dial, the date disk with the spiral of apertures machined into it and the time disks. In the photo, they're placed against the two square tools that help Cador determine the correct printing positions.

Kommen neue Teile aus Peters Werkstätte nach Luzern ist die Spannung gross! Bis anhin waren seine Lieferungen von einem schwer bewaffneten Sicherheitsdispositiv begleitet. Denn alle Zifferblätter waren aus Gold... ;-)...

Diesmal spazierte er lockeren Schrittes durch die Gegend. Erstens sind die Teile aus Messing und Titan und somit liegt der Wert in der Arbeit und die Materialien sind viel leichter...

Nun gut... Das Ganze ist etwas übertrieben... Es waren ja immer wenige Teile!

Hier sind sie also, die Zifferblätter, die Datumsscheibe mit der ausgefrästen Schnecke und die Zeitscheibe. Sie posieren auf den zwei quadratischen Werkzeugen um Cador die richtige Druckposition zu weisen.
42 mm titanium. Skin-friendly, light, water-resistant. Two parts, optimally machined and lathed. Needless to say, we want to show off Peter's handiwork. We leave the surfaces as he delivers them – they're beautiful as they are and don't need polishing. Next week sees the arrival of of the sapphire crystals from Stettler and then we'll be taking delivery of the coloured dials… And the next step?

42mm Titan. Hautfreundlich, leicht, wasserdicht. Zwei Teile beste Fräs- und Dreharbeit. Klar das wir Peters Arbeit zeigen. Die Oberfläche ist naturbelassen und wunderschön. Nächste Woche erwarten wir die Safirgläser von Stettler und dann freuen wir uns auf die farbigenZifferblätter... Wie das wohl weitergeht?

What does a small watchmaker do about the photos it posts on its website? Either the website doesn't open immediately, or computer-generated graphics are used. Sure, the latter would allow us to present air-brushed perfection. But aside from all the lateral thinking contained in the mechanics, the whole ochs und junior ethos is based around the charm of the raw, of the real, of the visible. Our anno cinquanta gallery contains photos of actual prototypes as worn on the wrist. The silver model you see on the website is in daily use.

The movements of the two gold models were transferred to two test watches after the photos were taken.

The photos you see in today's blog are of the 'final' anno cinquanta with its annual calendar. We have learnt how to successfully machine the hardened heat-patinated dial. The result is fine indices without any browning.

We use a disk of white gold 0.5 mm in thickness, which we heat in the oven to 950 Celsius – it darkens without bending.

Wie kommt eine kleine startende Uhrenfirma zu den Fotos für die Internetseite? Entweder die Internetseite startet nicht sofort oder es werden Computerzeichnungen verwendet. Natürlich könnte mit diesen eine synthetische Perfektion gezeigt werden. Die ochs und junior Uhren allerdings haben, neben der technischen Innovation, eben gerade den Charme des Rohen und Sichtbaren. So haben wir in den Galerien der anno cinquanta getragene Prototypen fotografiert. Die Silberuhr im Internet wird immer noch in dieser Ausführung genutzt.

Die Werke der beiden Golduhren wurden nach dem Fotografieren umgehend wieder in zwei Testuhren eingebaut.

So zeigen wir hier die ersten Fotos der "fertigen" Jahreskalender. Wir haben gelernt wie die Härte der hitzepatinerten Zifferblätter mit dem Fräswerkzeug zu überwinden ist. Das Resultat sind feine Indizies ohne aufstehende Brauen.

Die Erfahrung stellte sich ein wie eine 0.5mm dicke Weissgoldplatte im Ofen bei 950 Grad dunkel wird ohne sie zu verbiegen.

The new well-supported rotor bearing and the intermediate wheel (partly hidden in the photo) of the two spring barrels are custom made and run beautifully and smoothly. In contrast to the small ball bearing of the prototypes, which was overloaded by the mass of the white gold rotors, our new solution oozes effortlessness. Paul's movement is a superb piece of mechanical engineering in its own right; it also drives Ludwig Oechslin's annual calendar… We'll soon have more pictures for the anno cinquanta gallery…

Das neue, breit abgestützte Rotorlager und das (auf dem Bild leicht verdeckte) Verbindungsrad der zwei Federhäuser sind Massanfertigungen und laufen perfekt leicht.
